- you are physically healthy
- be honest with Dr. Culbertson about medications, including over-the-counter, vitamins, or supplements, drinking alcohol, and smoking cigarettes
- you are done having children
- your breasts are likely to stretch again, reversing the effects of the surgery
- you are psychologically stable
- your expectations are realistic
- you are seeking improvement, not perfection
- you do not expect it to change your overall looks, your life, or how people treat you

- consult with Dr. Culbertson
- have your complete medical history ready, she will need to review
- you and she will discuss your expectations and desires very carefully
- what type of lift technique to use
- if any other procedures are appropriate
- Dr. Culbertson will explain her technique, the type of anesthesia, the facility where the surgery will be done, and the risks and benefits of the surgery
- you may need to have a mammogram
- you will have instructions on eating, drinking, medications to avoid or that you must take
- please follow these guidelines, they are there to keep you safe
- arrange for someone to drive you home from surgery
- make sure you have someone with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery and even longer if you need it

- it will be done at an outpatient surgery center
- you will have general anesthesia (where you go to sleep)
- Dr. Culbertson makes incisions to remove excess skin and raise the breast into its new position then stitches them closed
- you will have gauze bandages held in place by a gentle elastic bandage

- your breasts will be swollen and sore for the first few days, you will have a prescription medicine to help control any discomfort
- your bandages will be removed in the first couple of days and your stitches in one or two weeks
- you will be placed in a supportive bra that you will wear day and night for three to four weeks
- you will notice numbness in areas at first, this usually resolves in the weeks to months after surgery, although occasionally it is permanent

- you will be up and around in a day or two
- depending upon how you feel, you may return to work in a week or so
- Dr. Culbertson will advise you regarding your activities, you should follow these directions
- avoid sex and other strenuous activities for approximately two weeks
- do not lift your arms overhead for approximately four weeks
- avoid sports for at least four weeks

- scars from mastopexy (breast lift) are extensive and permanent
- the results are not permanent – gravity, pregnancy, aging, and fluctuations in weight can all affect the shape of your breasts
- you are likely to be very satisfied if you fully understand the surgery and have realistic expectations
